The Picture Book Experience

A unique cultural journey into a Chinese grandmother's kitchen

Xiao Dou Makes Dumplings with Nainai (Grandma)

We will read a specially selected Chinese picture book that offers children at Little Lionhearts a genuine taste of Chinese home life, family love, and tradition.

What makes this book special

The story follows Xiao Dou on a playful, heartwarming morning as Nainai teaches her how to make jiaozi (Chinese dumplings). The dough rolls away, a chase begins, and through laughter and gentle guidance, Xiao Dou learns not just a recipe, but a family tradition passed down for generations.

Cultural experiences children will discover

Real Chinese home cooking – From rolling dough to pinching dumplings, children see how a real Chinese kitchen feels and sounds.

The meaning behind the food – Nainai explains, "Long ago, we shaped them to hold good luck. Now we shape them to hold each other." This introduces the deep Chinese value of family togetherness.

A hands-on connection – The story's rhythm ("Squish. Roll. Pinch.") and playful mishaps (the dough ball bouncing away) make the culture feel joyful and accessible, not foreign or distant.

Authentic pronunciation – The word jiaozi (JEE-ow-dzuh) appears naturally, allowing children to hear and try a real Chinese word in context.
